Famous Bible Verses

The 20 most-quoted, most-loved Bible verses in the English-speaking world. The lines believers keep coming back to — John 3:16, Psalm 23, Philippians 4:13, and more — read in two public-domain translations, with original commentary on each.

What makes a Bible verse famous? Usually it's a sentence so short and clear that it has carried itself across centuries — spoken at funerals and weddings, written on cards and tattoos, memorised by children and whispered by the dying. Many famous verses are theological summaries: whole books of doctrine compressed into eight or ten words. Others are promises — what God said when his people most needed to hear it. A few are simply beautiful, the kind of line that stays with you after a single reading.

Below are twenty verses that meet most or all of those criteria. They are the passages people search for most often when they search for Scripture at all — and the ones we have written the most extended commentary on. Each link opens a full study with both the World English Bible (WEB) and King James Version (KJV), plus a hand written reflection on the original setting and what the verse asks of us today.

Why these twenty?

We curated this list by triangulating three signals: Google search volume for the verse reference, the rate at which the verse appears in published devotionals and sermon indexes, and our own editorial sense of which lines our readers most often request. The result is a list weighted toward the New Testament, with a quiet anchor in the Psalms — which is roughly how the English-speaking church has carried Scripture for the last four centuries.
