About John 3:16
Spoken by Jesus to Nicodemus, a Pharisee who came to him by night, this verse sits at the heart of John's account of the gospel. Often called the "Bible in miniature," it compresses the entire arc of redemption into a single sentence: God's love, God's gift, our response, the alternative we are spared from, and the life we are invited into.
The Greek word for love here is agape — a love that initiates, that gives without first receiving. "The world" (kosmos) is not a flattering term in John's Gospel; it usually names humanity in opposition to God. Yet this is precisely whom God loves.
The verse is built on a chain of "so" and "that." So loved — that he gave. That whoever believes — should not perish, but have eternal life. The structure is conditional and welcoming at once. The condition is faith, not merit. The welcome is open: whoever.
The contrast at the end is stark. Perish and eternal life are presented as the only two possibilities. John's Gospel returns to these poles again and again — darkness and light, death and life, judgement and freedom.
For those wrestling with whether they qualify, John 3:16 answers before the question is finished: God's love has already moved first.
Both translations, side by side
WEB · World English Bible
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life."
KJV · King James Version
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
How the translations differ: The WEB is a modern public-domain revision of the 1901 ASV; the KJV dates to 1611. The KJV uses begotten, whosoever, believeth, everlasting, while the WEB renders these as one, and, whoever, believes. Both translate the same underlying Greek or Hebrew text — the differences are stylistic, not theological.
