Jesus Quotes

The most-quoted sayings of Jesus — the lines that shaped the moral imagination of the English-speaking world. Read each one in the World English Bible and the King James Version, with original commentary on what he meant and to whom he said it.

Jesus did not write a book. What we have of his words comes through four gospel accounts — Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John — each of which records his teaching in a slightly different voice. Some of his sayings are short enough to memorise in one breath: Love your enemies. Let not your heart be troubled. I am the way, the truth, and the life. Others are longer arguments, like the Sermon on the Mount or the Bread of Life discourse. All of them are gathered in this collection's parent — the full Bible at /read.

The verses below are the sayings most often searched, quoted, and committed to memory. Each one links to a fuller study with both translations and original commentary.

How Jesus taught

Jesus' teaching style was unusual for his time. He told stories — parables — rather than handing down lists of rules. He took ordinary objects (seeds, lamps, lost coins, water, bread) and made them carry the weight of the kingdom of God. He answered questions with other questions. He blessed people his society had written off. And he saved his harshest words for the religious leaders who treated faith as a performance.

Read his words slowly. They are designed to be lived with for a lifetime, not consumed in an evening.
