Comforting Bible Verses

Scripture for the days when grief, fear, or uncertainty have made themselves at home. These verses don't pretend the hard thing isn't hard — they offer the company of a God who has been close to grief before, and who is close to ours now.

The Bible's most comforting passages were rarely written from comfortable places. Psalm 23 was likely composed late in David's life, after he had been hunted, betrayed, and bereaved. Lamentations was written inside the ruins of Jerusalem. Paul wrote the “my grace is sufficient” promise from prison. The peace these verses offer is not the absence of trouble — it is a peace that has walked through trouble and come out still able to speak.

Read slowly. One verse a day is enough.

When grief is fresh

If you have just lost someone, the verses on this page can feel impossibly heavy or impossibly small. Both responses are honest. Three notes for the early days of grief:

  • You don't have to feel comforted to be loved. God does not require you to be in a particular emotional state for him to be near. Lament is biblical. Anger is biblical. Numbness is biblical. The Psalms have all of these — read Psalm 88 if you need to see one that doesn't tidy itself up.
  • Pick one verse, not all of them. A short verse you can return to a hundred times in a hard week is worth more than a long list you scroll through once.
  • Let other people pray for you. James 5:14 assumes that some seasons are too heavy to carry alone.
